New Developments

We've moved far away from the days of "poopoo head" and I just realized that I should update the site with some new Willisms:

1. Lately we hear "why" questions constantly. Most of the time we can't even venture a guess at why something is the way it is but by the end of the day, I've been forced to wonder and speculate about more things than I ever thought possible. I'm assured that this is only the beginning.

2. He has added some new phrases like, "I'm not your friend." and "You're mean." Just as a joke I started saying these things to him at random times to try and figure out what he wants me to say when he tells me that he isn't my friend. Usually it goes like this: "I'm not your friend." "Well, I want to be your friend." "Okay, let's be friends."

3. He still talks under his breath the most hilarious inner thoughts. The other day he was drawing a picture of his daddy and under his breath you could hear him saying, "Here is his penis (huge, took up the entire page) with a leg on either side (tiny little legs), a big belly, a neck, a chin, and glasses."

4. Someone at school taught him that when you ask what someone looks like they should always look like a princess.

5. He talks about monsters, bad guys and shooting on occasion. He does know that monsters are only in books and that bad guys are sometimes in real life. He loves the role of the police who catch the bad guys. He also knows about thieves who are people who steal things without asking or paying for them. Almost all bad guys are thieves in his world. Oh, yeah, and they might go to prison and never get out.

6. He has lied on occasion. He will lie to protect himself from a mistake he has made and he will lie when it might mean that he'll get something that he wants. It is by no means pervasive but he doesn't yet seem to understand the value of honesty. The other day I woke up and he had his bedroom door shut. When I asked him what it was about he said that there was a monster in there. Later as we were reading books he interrupted me and said, "Mom, um, there isn't a monster in there because monsters are only in books but, um, I was in there and it was morningtime and I had to pee quickly so I peed on my floor." So this coming clean was pretty new to me. Up to this point he would say something like, "I don't know who did that? Did dad?"

7. He is rather comfortable letting a younger child know what he needs from him/her but if it is an older child he often yields.

8. He still has trouble with "r"s and consonant blends like "th". This means that he is "fwee" instead of "three".

9. He is quick to warm-up to new folks. If you are a designated "neighbor" and you happen to be outside he likes to talk, update on daily life, remind you about sunscreen, invite himself over, etc. Upon meeting someone new he MIGHT have five minutes or so of shy silence but then he's ready to play. He told me the other day, "Mom, I have a LOT of friends." Just like most children, he makes friends whereever he goes... park, pool, doctors office, grocery store, etc.

10. He still has a hair fetish. Sometimes when I'm talking with him he will reach up to smooth my hair or push a piece behind my ear. I noticed him doing this the other day with his friend Jasmine too. When he is at the hairdresser, he becomes catatonic.
