Screen Time

For a number of reasons Montessori educators frown upon television for children, particularly for children under six years old. To that end we haven't introduced the television to Will and our television is shrouded in a cabinet downstairs that he hasn't taken an interest in.

His teacher told me today that they were doing some cards together and one of the pictures had a television. Will was just confidently naming these objects with his peers... table, desk, couch.... until they came to the picture of the television and he was silent. Candace suspected that he might say computer or something since he has seen us with our laptops around the house. He didn't say anything though and the other kids offered up, "television."

I'm sure one of these days he will add TV to his word bank but for now it is just amazing that he has no idea what it is! It isn't that he has NEVER ever seen one either because I think his grandparents have watched TV around him but he just hasn't had enough meaningful and frequent experiences with it that it has become a part of his vocabulary. How interesting.
