Big Bump

Will took a bad fall this weekend and hit his head on a sharp rock= hole in the head, blood pumping out, mama frantically finding an EMT for help, a trip to urgent care for glue (aka stitches), all is well again.

Amazingly, this was a pretty smooth and calm situation. Jasper sat sucking his thumb through the whole ordeal, onlookers offered wipes and soothing words, Will cried for about ten seconds and then calmly sat while the EMT irrigated his wound and bandaged him up. I think that I was the most frantic one at first as it was really my very first time seeing my hurt child. Will really has graced me with very mild illnesses and injuries. We hardly have even used a bandage on him for six years! So when I saw the blood I felt a little panicked at first but we found the EMT pretty fast and then I got back into my zone again.

One Year Old Report

Jasper is letting us know his needs lately with a very strong pterodactyl scream. We are coaching him to use words for "up" (for dad to carry him) or "potty" (for when he needs to be offered the toilet) or "all done" (when he is finished eating) and so far, we aren't making much progress with it. Even though he did win the Nobel Prize from his baby friends, according to Will our home has been not so peaceful.

Jasper is feeding himself independently with his spoon and sometimes with his fork. He drinks from a tiny glass. He is pretty reliable with the toilet. He certainly has all his bowel movements in the toilet but he is also reliably giving me the pterodactyl when he needs to pee. Today he has worn the same pair of underwear but I put him in a diaper for his nap.

In his world all the doors need to be shut. Whenever he enters a room he turns around to shut the door on us. Sometimes I'll be folding laundry in his room, and I hear the door slam shut. That's him. In the bathroom he does not sit on his potty chair until he has that door closed on us. He has a little garage that we gave him for his birthday and those doors must also always be shut. Sometimes I open them as I walk by the shelf and as he follows behind he makes sure to shut them.

He loves to take turns with things too. He will play with something briefly and then hand it over to whoever is nearby whether it is one of us or a baby friend. His plan is for that person to play with the toy and then give it back to him. I think he gleaned this idea from how we play ball back and forth. Sometimes I also think that he is wanting someone to show him how to use the toy and then he wants to take a turn.

He is a very steady walker and is very busy exploring. He loves to take walks and play at the park these days. Thankfully he really isn't very oral with things and for the most part just loves to touch or carry. He is a maximum effort kind of guy right now. He loves to carry something heavy across the room. He will tote around my purse or his brother's lunchbox back and forth across the house. If he sees a hill, he'll immediately try walking down it and stumble. He is the same way with stairs and just wants to practice going up and down.

I honestly don't know what his first clear word is...he says hi, mama, dada, cat, dog, and ball. He will repeat a set of sounds in relation to an object over and over again but I'm just not sure what the word is yet. If something is furry or cute he has a very distinct and excited little sound that he makes. It stumps me. I just can't figure out what it is yet.

He still seems to be taking two naps a day on occasion but generally takes one long nap in the late morning. If I can keep things exciting for him we can make it to lunch and then he naps afterwards but lately he wakes up at the crack of 6am and then is tired for a nap by 10-11am. My goal is to get him back to his 7:30 am wake-up. It seems like once he started walking he doesn't sleep past 6am. This is not unlike Will so I'm well aware that "sleeping in" might be another couple years away!

All in all, a busy little guy who keeps us on our toes!

This little lady is Lane. Love her sweet black shoes!

Hard to see in the photo but they are weaving the ribbon around the May pole. Very pretty!

Hello Mr One Year Old

Birthday Party

I think Jasper's expression says it all about his first party. He looked at times to be curiously confused by it all and then as the day came to an end there was pure excitement and delight as he played with new toys, crumpled up wrapping paper, and walked around the room like a cowboy. By bedtime, and on the outset, he looked like a child with boundless energy but he fell asleep hard in about three minutes flat!

His celebration was pretty simple. For dinner we had one of his favorite meals: homemade chicken rice soup and homemade Pink Lady applesauce. Will and I made White Chocolate Strawberry cake (for us) and Jasper ate a maple sweetened muffin. I was able to make the birthday banner this weekend in bright Cinco de Mayo colors. He opened a couple presents from his family, took a bath, and his brother read him a birthday story. I should note that his favorite gifts were in the cards. He grinned with delight at the $1 bill (for turning 1). He crumpled it and looked at me to see if I was upset about it. Then he laughed and crumpled some more.

Uno!

I can't believe that this bright shiny boy has made it around the sun one year already! He has been so much fun for all of us as we celebrate his milestones and get to know his unfolding personality each day.

This month I feel like we've seen him grow and change in great bounding leaps. He suddenly began waving and using sign language. Instead of just taking things out he began to put things away. He is more aware of routines, relationships, and how to express his needs and wants. He has developed a pterodactyl scream which is a great deal louder than his brother's was at this age. His walking is speeding up, his cheeks are slimming, his appetite is enormous, and his need to explore (aka get into everything) is endless. He is a very busy person!

We've been reminiscing too about this time last year as we were preparing for his birth. I reminded Will that not only was Jasper born on Cinco de Mayo (many great colorful parties to come!) but it is also International Day of the Midwife. This means that he will forever be celebrating his birth alongside the wonderful work of his talented midwife, Heather. As Will put it today, "She soothed you, Mom, while you were giving birth."

So today marks the beginning of what many would consider the most difficult time of parenting-- as these littles exert their power and relative independence upon the world. For many it now begins a game of survival both as a parent to endure it but also to assure that our children survive the often crazy things they do (running into the street, eating small objects from the floor, etc.). But it is also just about the cutest couple of years you ever see and I plan to document as much of it as I can. I have enough distance with a six year old that I definitely know these days are going to go by fast. Soon, these pudgy little wrists will make way for lanky legs, missing teeth, dirty fingernails, and sweaty feet.

Happy happy birthday little man. We are so glad you joined our family!

May Day Hike

Afterschool

Whenever we have a warm day we spend a couple hours at the park afterschool. Jasper loves to watch all the kids play together. It has been fun to see the progression from a tiny sleeping baby to an independent walker. Now that he can choose where he goes, he often heads over to the basketball court to watch the balls or he spends his time playing with sand. But whether here nor there, his brother is the apple of his eye!
