Pease Porridge Hot, Pease Porridge Cold

This month has been a bit fickle with food as Jasper has cycled through the illness and the cutting of his fourth tooth. I'm happy to report that after much hard work he has finally cut that monolithic tooth and proudly displays his jagged little grin. But it seems like half the time he would eat and half the time he would refuse his solid food and breastmilk. I think he actually lost a little bit of weight through the whole ordeal.

He has enjoyed some new things this month though, namely spinach with lamb puree, kale with white bean puree, parsnips with carrots, beets with apples, mango with blueberries, waffles with marionberries, chicken rice soup, toast with butter, scrambled eggs, and even a waffle fry from Uneeda Burger! He seems to like it all but I daresay he is more of a savory eater and does not prefer sweet or sour foods. His brother LOVED fruit and sweet things. I remember Will would bounce up and down in his chair when he saw the pears coming. Jasper? Not so much. He loves sausage, peas or even spinach but will sometimes decline a bowl of sweet peaches.

I've also included a picture of some storebought baby food. We've come a long way from the jar foods! Take a look at this convenience! You just squirt this food out onto the spoon and you can just use what you need without contaminating the container. I puree mostly fresh foods that I make myself but when we go out to eat I will bring along something from the store like this. Homemade foods are so much more flavorful and richly colored compared to the storebought baby food but the convenience of a meal in a pouch is really nice when we are on the go.

Is it February Yet?

It has been quite a month for illness around here. I think that Jasper and Will have been sick for almost the entire month with what feels like the same virus cycling over and over again. Just as they start to pull out of it I hear coughing and congestion all over again. Will has missed almost an entire week of school (unheard of for him) and actually went to the ER for oral steroids for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Jasper has also been suffering and went on antibiotics for a double ear infection. I just can't believe how hard it has been to kick this thing. I have both of them on immune boosting remedies and probiotics combined with lots of rest and sleep but to no avail.

Mr. Tough Guy

Look at the maximum effort he is exerting to get that wagon moving! My leg was holding it so that I could get a photo of him with it and he was working so hard to get it moving again!

Will and Jasper have been very busy with this wagon. Will loads it up and Jasper pushes it across the house and empties it and then they go again. Jasper pushes the Georges (Will has a big and little brother Curious George) or he pushes toys or he pushes his brother around with a big drooly grin.

Poor Mr Tough Guy has also been trying to let us know that he has a DOUBLE ear infection. Will really spoiled us in a lot of ways as he was never seriously ill, never went to the ER or took antibiotics, etc. Finally I threw up my hands in surrender today after weeks of fussy baby and took him the doctor to see if this was more than just teething pain. Poor guy had some pretty red ears! He is on a round of antibiotics which is a shame but have already given him incredible relief in just two doses. He is doing wonderfully, sleeping great, and in good spirits again.

Pulling Up

More shots of Jasper standing from this past month.

Rocking Chair

He loves to sit in his rocking chair and look at books. He can't climb into it on his own but his brother loves to lift him up into it and then grinning, he rocks back and forth.

A Road Bike Fit for a Boy

Will saved up his allowance plus combined Christmas money from his grandparents to purchase his first road bike the Fuji Ace 20. He is pretty excited about it and can finally keep up with his dad (or at least have a similar cadence).

Cruising

It must seem odd that I was just recently posting about crawling. Shortly after the first crawl we saw this guy pulling up to stand and then he was standing and lifting up his legs like he was stepping and then he was squatting and standing over and over again until a few days ago we saw him take his first steps with the walker wagon. Now all he does is practice walking and cruising all over the house. We are trying to slow him down. Will put the walker wagon away in his room today and shut the door. So instead he used his tiny dining chair to push himself all around the kitchen!

Teething

Mr Baby is putting us through all kinds of trouble these days as he works on his third chomper. Ugh, I keep thinking it will come through but it stays there hovering at the edge of the gumline! Just look at all that drool!

Tipple House

Had so much fun this weekend with 9 women at a beautiful resort cabin in Cle Elum to celebrate Silje's 40th birthday. Wow, what a treat to relax in the backyard hot tub, eat luscious meals, watch movies, snowshoe along groomed trails, take Jasper on a little sledding trip and play with our baby friends Reid (nine months) and Karson (14 months).

This inspired me to start thinking ahead to how I'll celebrate my 40th birthday... I can dream can't I?

Looking Ahead

Adorable though they might be, this reminds me of how close we are to the toddler years: here is my sick, snotty, teething, scratched up boy with food on his shirt.

George

Will doesn't go antwhere without his "baby" these days. He even offers him the tiny doll potty!

Jasper's New Bag

I made this to store his little meals when we leave the house. There is a matching spoon holder and cup cozy.

Mr. Eight Month Old

It's hard to believe that another month has flown by and we're at eight months old. I find myself thinking about birthday plans already and Molly actually sent me a pattern for a birthday hat!

Jasper has been crawling for about a month now, but just recently we've gone from crazy to total mayhem in regards to what he is getting himself into. First, he is FAST. And secondly, he is wildly driven to get anything that is dangerous, out of reach or that his brother just recently touched. He has eaten or mouthed his own feces, a paper snowflake, bits of catfood, legos, and a variety of other things that were found either on the floor or within his reach.

Another milestone is that he started pulling up pretty soon after he started crawling--like on the same day. He's been crawling (first backwards and then very decidedly forwards), pulling to stand, or kneeling and then plop back down onto his bottom for the better part of this month. Then on the cusp of his eighth month birthday it does appear that he can now stand with very little support. Tonight he pulled up with one hand on the edge of his dad's glasses (which aren't really all that supportive).

This month he's also continuing to enjoy new foods -- peaches, goat milk yogurt (VERY small taste), beets, dal, kiwi, mango, millet, lamb, and o's. I've been giving him some more solidly textured foods too since he seems to be making chewing motions. Along with the chewing motions come further sounds too. He's got a very loud, gruff babble that is very cute. Lots of "baba" "mama" "mum mum" sounds.

And clearly he's eating well because he's growing in doubletime. For his eight-month birthday he celebrated by wearing his new fleece suit (a gift from Nauko) that is an 80 (10-24 months). At this point he is pretty clearly in the 9-12 or 12-18 month tops (that often look like manly crop tops) and 12 month pants. I would have never imagined him to blow through clothes this fast.

Jasper's stats at 8 months old
Wake up time: Usually around 7:30-8 a.m.
Bedtime: 7-7:30 p.m.
Naps: Still taking three a day @ 10:30ish, 1:30ish, 4:30ish.
Meals/solids: 3 meals a day/2 oz. each
Milestones: Crawling and pulling up
Physical stats: Three teeth with the fourth on its way.
Weight/Height: I'll do this on Monday
Coloring: His eyes remain a gray/green color and his hair is finally coming in with some soft waves and light brown color. He is very much his own little guy--doesn't resemble his brother too much.

Drum

Jasper went through a maraca phase a few weeks ago at around 7 months old and now towards his eighth month he is in a drum phase. He first saw a drum at one of our music classes and he crawled right to it and started drumming. He sat and drummed and then he stood and drummed over and over. When we got home I pulled out our little drum and he seems to really love it though it is not nearly as cool as the large gathering drum we have at music class.

We've also made the switch to underwear. He still wears a diaper at naps and nighttime. I also keep him in diapers for outings but when he is at home we try to have him in training pants. Since we started earnestly offering the potty to him at around 5 months old, it has been a few months now since he has pooped in his diapers but I had to laugh because the very first day that I put him in underwear was also a day that I fed him yogurt for the first time. Sure enough, he is off in the family room wearing his underwear and moments later I hear him drumming in a puddle of diarrhea!

Snowflake Obsessed

We are very obsessed with paper snowflakes at the moment but we can't hang them too low otherwise they "go missing" and show up in baby's diaper.

Trouble

The very minute that Will is away at school this is what I discover: Jasper went straight into his brother's room, pulled out the box of special Legos and dumped it over so that he could mouth as many as he could before I find out what is happening. Whenever it is dead silent, I know that trouble is on the rise!
The other day I found an almost entire paper snowflake in his diaper contents!
He also is fascinated by the guitar, the cat food, and our shoes.

Happy New Year
