Red Bull Soap Box Derby

This soap box was a ferry boat pulling the Seattle Space Needle.

This is the escaped troll under the bridge with two troll renegade bikers alongside.

A soap box shaped like a salmon with a mechanized tail that wiggled all the way down the hill!

There was a soap box race on Fremont Avenue (41st and Fremont, to be exact) just a block from our house today. We brought Will down there to check it out and it was quite a spectacle in true Fremont fashion.

Kittens Adopted!

The kittens have found a new home! I posted a flyer on the school bulletin board about them and sure enough, a family expressed an interest! They came over to view them on Saturday and Paul was able to encourage them into adopting both of the cats.

Once they are neutered, spayed and microchipped we can send them to their new family! I'm so relieved to know that they won't ever live in a cage. These two kittens are so adorable and sweet. We've already grown attached to them but I know that it is lucky to have a home for these guys and then next summer I can foster another litter. This seems to be a great experience for Will to care for and love these animals. Perhaps in the next litter, he'll be old enough to help bottle feed and we'll be ready to have him choose one of the kittens for himself when it is time for adoption.

He is incredibly attached to Marmalade though and I'm sure that this is going to be a hard break. Marmalade does have a very unique personality and truly loves to play with kids.

Annual Organic Moms Camping Trip

This weekend we went on our annual camping trip with the Organic Moms Group. This year we went out to Camano Island State Park which was a lovely location with a great view and beach access. There were about five other families along with us and we shared a group site.

Will and I played on the beach for several hours on Saturday and then had a nice dinner together with the other families of rice pasta with smoked salmon, fresh pesto, and sheep's cheese along with eggplant, tomato, and goat cheese grilled sandwiches, grilled corn, forbidden rice pudding, and marinated vegetables.

I was so impressed with the other families in our group who were incredibly considerate of my dietary needs. Many of them vary their grains and eat incredibly healthy anyway but I was so surprised to have eaten so well in a situation like this where everyone contributes to the meal. With the exception of blackberry multigrain pancakes on Sunday morning, every single food available was gluten, egg, soy, and dairy free.

It was also serendipitous that our friends Susanne and David happened to bring along an extra air mattress. Strangely, this queen sized mattress fit inside our tiny backpackers tent so instead of the cold hard ground and tree roots, we slept on air! I was immensely grateful. I should learn that car camping means luxury and next year I'll prepare myself. I regretted not bringing along wine, fluffy pillows, soap, sheets, cooler, etc.

We also celebrated Faith's third birthday with fruit sweetened banana muffins along with all of her favorite foods on tiny toothpick skewers: turkey sausage, avocado, apples, olives, and cucumbers. Each of the kids had a colorful silk cape to wear and they ran through the trees wearing them.

Building a Dam

Lately Will's favorite activity is to build dams at Golden Gardens. He and his dad usually venture out there after dinner each night.

Visiting his New Classroom

Will has moved up to the "Children's House" this year and we are SO excited! Here he is on his first day which was just a short visit to the classroom. Paul took a million pictures but here are just a few. The first one is bringing chocolate chip cookies to his teacher and then the second one is meeting Paula and watching her play her fiddle. The third photo is a Montessori bells lesson.

Solid Food

Just a few days before I'm scheduled to go back to work and Marmalade is eating solid food. Yeah!! It has been a long haul, believe me, and I'm so relieved that he finally did it. For several days it meant that Paul was making him scrambled eggs but he has finally made the switch to regular kitten food along with a saucer full of KMR (kitten replacement formula) occasionally. Have you ever heard of a kitten who loves eggs? Well, here he is.
